Donations for Kids Fishing Derby Sept 25th Waukegan, IL

Donations for Kids Fishing Derby Sept 25th Waukegan, IL

I just thought that I would throw this up on the salmon fishing board for anyone interested in helping out. On September 25th, Salmon Unlimited of IL will be holding its annual kids fishing derby at the pier in Waukegan, IL. It's a time for children who do not normally get the opportunity to go fishing to have a chance to enjoy the waters of Lake Michigan, while also having a chance to receive prizes, along with food and drink. Anyone interested in donating prizes, money, food, drinks or even time to help with instruction and weigh-ins, please feel free to contact salmonunlimitednews@yahoo.com or me personally via private message. Thank you very much Sincerely, Phil Metz

Blow It Up!!!!

Blow It Up!!!!

Time for those of us who love trout, salmon and steelhead to really get the hype about Kype out there. After looking at the latest issue of Kype, the great layout and sponsor information, along with the Steelhead Streams video, I feel Kype can really become the magazine by the fishermen, for the fishermen. Wouldn't you like to know what is the best affordable lodging for your needs when you visit a new fishing location, where to grab a sandwich at a good place or about other local interests in the area??? How about those little tactics and techniques that really put more fish on the ends of your line? Kype is not as big as some other nationally known magazines and that is what makes it unique. George'snew motto is keeping it real ans that is how we as fellow fisherman should be. So the next time you're out and talking fishing, be sure to mention Kype. Together we all will make this the best salmonoid magazine and community around. Thanks all.

Fighting a fish

Fighting a fish

While i was at the Suffern show and talking to George, I told him how i have lost a couple of nice steelies due to them running straight down river in sections that i couldn't chase the fish down the bank. So George explained to me that dropping the rod tip into the water and plying pressure the fish will turn around and come back. While fishing in Ohio this past weekend any fish that tried to run down river, I tried this technique and it worked every time. I am looking forward to trying this on salt water fish this year to see how it works. What techniques do you guys use that work for you?

Tandem Flies

Tandem Flies

OK another question, I know, I know. I have lots of questions but no answers. Many of you use tandem flies. Is this something that you always use or is it just in certain types of water? What type of fly combination do you like and how do you rig them? In the SR i have seen people using a streamer at the end of their line with an egg pattern about a foot up. All answers are welcomed. Thank you and tight lines...

I'll start by saying that I've been for almost 10 years and I'm pretty proficient in it. I can catch fish pretty much any where with it, but I don't know everything. I'm starting this group so everyone from the curious to the professional can learn something new. I would like to more about what other pinheads are doing in the areas they fish, and maybe help someone new to this style of fishing.

"Cabin Fever" Tell us your story...

OK, some of you are getting out pretty regularly and some like me are not. Last night i was tying flies and was thinking about past fishing trips that I’ve done. I have had the pleasure of going on some really good fishing trips with friends and family. So I started thinking, What was one of the best times I’ve had fishing. So I wanted to share my story with you all and in turn you could share your story with all of us. One late April afternoon I was going home from work. I was driving down a road that runs parallel to the Passaic River in NJ. It had been raining for about 3 or 4 day and the river was over its banks. As I passed a small park and saw that the water was up to the swings. I was thinking that this would take some time to get back to normal. Then I thought I saw a swirl next to the swing. Am I going crazy? I thought to myself. So I pulled over to the shoulder and just starred at the water by the swing. There!!!! Another swirl. I got out of my car and as any fisherman would do went to investigate. I was shocked to find big Carp in the 8 to 15lb range. The fish were eating worms that were coming out of the ground due to the flooding water. These Carp looked like Bone Fish on the flats. So I raced home grabbed my 5wt spent 10min tying some small worm flies and told my wife I was going to go fishing in the Passaic. Knowing me as well as he does she didn’t even question it. I raced back to the park and geared up. That’s when I realized that I forgot my waders. What would you have done? Yup, me too. I went right in without even thinking about it. I got up onto of a picnic table and started casting at the Carp. The first take that I got was great, when I set the hook it took off like a torpedo in 1 foot of water. I must have caught and released about 4 or 5 fish before a crowd started to show up. I guess the site of seeing me standing on a picnic table soaking wet and casting to the grass was too good to pass up. Before the end of the day a couple of other fishermen joined me. The fish were there for about 2 days until the water receded. But that first day was the most exciting. Well that’s my story let’s hear some more from you all… Tight lines...

Future Goals, Asiprations, Etc. Regarding Steelheading

Ok, so the new year is upon us and those resolutions are alive and kicking. With this in mind, I'm curious on what the goals, aspirations, destinations, etc you guys would like to accomplish this coming year. For me it's becoming more proficient with my fly casting and learning about centerpinning. How about you???
